Great Newsome Brewery has gained national listings with two major pub chains.

The award-winning craft brewer, based at South Frodingham, East Yorkshire, is to supply Holderness Dark to JD Wetherspoons for a 12-week period from February 19.

And its strong golden beer, Pig's Ear, is to be listed with Mitchells & Butlers for 13 weeks from March 19 as part of a seasonal range.

The deals mean that Great Newsome name will be seen in the UK's four capital cities, plus Dublin, this winter and spring.

Managing director Matthew Hodgson welcomed the increased profile for the company after overcoming strong competition to gain the listings.

"Our main market is here in East Yorkshire, and it will remain our focus, but this is a further chance for people in other parts of the country to enjoy our real ales.

"It will help us to spread the Great Newsome name, which is important in securing a wider trading base to strengthen the business now and for the long term."

Holderness Dark is part of the Great Newsome core range and is a stronger version of the once popular Hull Brewery Mild, brewed in Hull city centre until the mid-1980s.

JD Wetherspoons is to offer it as a guest beer to nearly 900 houses in the UK and Ireland, including London, Belfast, Cardiff and Dublin.

Birmingham-based Mitchells & Butlers is to sell Pig's Ear into its Nicholson's Estate, which is mainly in London and the south-east, but with clusters of pubs in the north of England and Scotland, especially in Edinburgh.

Pig's Ear is the result of a 'happy accident' when malt being used for lager-style Cold Snap was darker than expected and resulted in a tasty golden ale, which the brewery now produces seasonally.

The firm also reports that its new regional deal with Tesco has proved successful so far, with strong sales over Christmas.

Since starting out in 2007, the farm-based brewery, with its reputation for classic easy-drinking ales with a modern twist, has built a loyal following for beers such as world award winner Frothingham Best bitter and the business's very first brew, Sleck Dust.

All Great Newsome's beers are made with homegrown malt and the brewery’s own strain of yeast.
